The importance of Life Planning

Life planning is an ongoing and lifelong process for personal fulfillment. In the stage of study, life planning education plays an important role in cultivating students’ ability to know themselves, to plan, to set goals and to reflect, and to recognize and link up the various paths of further study and employment. 

As a parent, how can you help your child develop a career plan?

Setting clear goals enables children to have a clear direction and to achieve progress through continuous learning, evaluation and review. In the process when they get the driving force to motivate themselves , children can gain a sense of achievement and satisfaction. In conclusion, career planning education enables children to recognize their own interests and abilities at different stages of growth, develop their self-confidence and self-management skills, and eventually to master their own future development of career paths.

 

In addition to the teachers at school, parents also play a very important role in the career planning education of their children. Parents can assist their children to plan and set goals at different stages to achieve their ideal dreams by understanding the character and abilities of their children, exploring their potential, and instilling the good values into their children.

Career planning key process

In the career planning education of children, how can parents help them to plan their goals at different stages?

Parents play an extremely important role in their children’s career planning. Parents can follow the following five steps to help their children develop their education and employment plans to achieve their aspirations and goals.

To develop and achieve their goal is a cyclical process. In this process, continuous exploration, experimentation and review are carried out to develop a blueprint for the future. The following is the key planning process:

  1. Understand yourself
    1. Communicate with your children in order to help them to understand and develop their interests, abilities and aspirations. Also communicate with teachers to understand the strengths and weaknesses of their children. At the same time, give your children enough room to think independently and help them to understand themselves.
  2. Look for exploration
    1. Proactively seek and explore various types of information with your children and provide appropriate advice and assistance for them.
  3. Integrated assessment
    1. Accompany your children to integrate all kinds of information, measure related factors such as time, ability, people, and issues, and then guide them to narrow the scope and conduct assessments.
  4. Develop a plan
    1. After the assessment, assist your children to develop relevant plans and set short-term goals and directions.
  5. Put the plan into practice
    1. Support and encourage your children to try hard and gradually implement goals and plans.
  6. Review and reflection
    1. In the process of assisting your children to fulfil their goals, encourage them to review and reflect on whether they are consistent with the original plan, so as to improve the plan and strive to move towards the goal.

  • Understand your child's interests, potential and abilities

  • Encourage your child to set short-term and long-term goals, and then fulfil them step by step
  • Communicate with the school to understand your child's learning and difficulties
  • Provide suitable degree of freedom for your child and give them a free hand to develop their strengths

Secondary 3 Selection of subjects

Secondary 4 is a new stage of learning. For children who are attending Form 3, choosing elective subjects is very important in their life planning. Sometimes, parental expectation and unilateral decisions may put high pressure on their children when it comes to S4 streaming, which may, in turn, affect their future performance. Parents can learn about relevant information and join the discussions with their children, listen to their opinions, and share their ideas.

The following is the senior secondary curriculum information:
The senior secondary curriculum consists of three parts, including core subjects, elective subjects, and other learning experiences (OLE). Students are required to take four core subjects and two to three elective subjects, as well as participating in other learning experiences.

* Mathematics includes the compulsory part and two extension modules (non-required, students can choose one of the extension units according to their interests):
Module 1 (M1) "Calculus and Statistics" and Module 2 (M2) "Algebra and Calculus".
# Most of the "Other Learning Experiences" are arranged by the school during class. Students often participate in various types of learning activities in the classroom or off the campus. In addition, the school gives students enough "other learning experiences" hours both inside and outside the class, and students generally do not need to arrange extra hours to fulfil this component.If a student chooses to take eight subjects when applying for the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE), at least one of the subjects must come from the following areas:
• Elective subjects: Ethics & Religion Studies / Music / Sports / Visual Arts
• Applied Learning Courses (ApL)
• Other language subjects
The school will decide which elective subjects to offer depending on the actual situation and the needs of the students. Some schools offer applied learning courses or other language subjects.
