Transportation

The most popular public transportation in Hong Kong island public transport. Land transportation has an average daily capacity of about 12.6 million passengers, of which railways and franchised buses are the mainstream of transportation. Hong Kong is also one of the busiest ports in the world, the port activities in 2017 Hong Kong had 185,420 vessel arrivals. In recent years, the industry has offered subsidy and training programmes to attract more young people to join this industry. The main job positions in railway and franchised bus field are bus captains, MTR station officers and MTR captains, while marine field is divided into deck and engine department officers.

Duties

  • Operate buses on specified routes and carry passengers their destinations safely

Working hours

Morning and night shift (work approximately 10 hours a day, including 1 hour of paid meal breaks)

  • Station crowd control and inspection

Entry requirements

  • Level 2 or above in five subjects (including English, Chinese and Mathematics) in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE)
  • Completion of approved maritime courses and pre-sea training
  • When the deck trainee receives on-the-job training and obtains 18 months of sailing experience, he/she can apply for the Ocean Level 3 (Deck Senior Crew) Certificate of Competency Examination. Upon passing the qualification, he/she will be eligible for three or two positions.

  • Handle the administrative work of the engine department
  • Maintain on board machinery, electrical appliances and motor room facilities
  • Ensure all machines, appliances and facilities are in good condition

Entry requirements

  • Level 2 or above in five subjects (including English, Chinese and Mathematics) in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE)
  • Completion of an approved maritime course
  • When the trainee accepts training onboard and obtains 6 months of sailing experience, he/she can apply for the Certificate of Competency of the Ocean Level 3 (Engineering Senior Crew). After passing the examination, he/she is qualified to serve as a three- or two-wheel.
